The Santa Fe Railroad had a stop at a place called Claremont in January 1887. It was one of about thirty
town sites laid out between San Bernardino and the city of Los Angeles in anticipation of a population explosion
resulting from the arrival of the railroad. Incorporated as a city in 1907, Claremont is known for its
seven world-renowned academic institutions, the Claremont Colleges, and its tree-lined streets, historic buildings,
and New England town feel. Many of the Colleges are consistently rated among the best in the nation.
Claremont is a small, upper middle to upper class, well educated community largely populated by professionals and
their families. Due to the number of professors from the Claremont Colleges who live in Claremont, the number
of post-graduate degrees per capita is unusually high. As such, it is known as "The City of Trees and PhD's."
Claremont is primarily residential, with commercial activity centered around The Village (as it is known to
most residents). The Jewel of Southern California, Claremont Village has an east coast ambiance and a rich
history rooted in California's citrus industry. Claremont Village, the City's historic shopping district,
is the quintessential american downtown, with small tree-lined streets, upscale boutiques, restaurants, cafes,
and a Laemmle movie cinema. The Village's new public plaza, or Town Square, is an outdoor living room,
landscaped with fountains and other amenities ideal for the relaxation visitors.
